GDB-COBOL Debugger

GDB-COBOL is a companion debugger for the GCOBOL compiler. Based on GNU GDB, it understands GCOBOL executables, displays COBOL variables, and steps over PERFORM statements.

One package for Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04

GDB-COBOL installation has changed: the debugger is now distributed as a single amd64 (x86-64) .deb package that installs on either Ubuntu 22.04 or Ubuntu 24.04. You no longer need to select a release-specific debugger package. Download the same file for either system. Ubuntu 26.04 is not supported by this build.

Install the shared Ubuntu package

After downloading, open a terminal in the directory containing the file and run the same command on either supported Ubuntu version:

sudo apt install ./gdb-cobol-19.0.50-20261103-amd64-ubu-174e0.deb

This installs the GDB-COBOL debugger. The GCOBOL compiler remains a separate download; choose the compiler package matching your Ubuntu release from Installation Packages above.

GnuCOBOL Source Code

The installation packages above include GCOBOL together with COBOLworx’s CBL-GDB debugging extensions. Official GnuCOBOL source-code releases remain available from the GnuCOBOL project.
